Coming to Rest at Resto

I went to Resto last night for dinner, and it was quite pleasant.  I like the look of the place on the inside, and the Belgian beer list is extensive and awesome. However, I think this place tries way too hard to be too low key and chill, when at the end of the day the people who go there are far from that.  The food was good, if not quite a bit overpriced for what it is.  (I had the burger, but it wasn't the most special burger I have ever had in my life.)  Next time I go, I think I'll be in the mood for some Mussels and Frites which looked quite delectable.  Also, I may need to try a blonder Belgian beer.  I tried to be creative and I went for the double ale.  It was pretty dark and quite heavy, but it was one of the most flavorful beers out there.  I also want to try this awesome beer from Cooperstown that looked pretty sexy on the menu, a faux-Belgian one of sorts.  Anyway, Resto is relaxing, but that part of town, the dregs of Murray Hill does nothing for me.

Raj Mahal

Go to Raj Mahal on 6th Street for great East Village Indian. The dinner special was awesome. I had a great soup, an amazing chicken dish, and the curry vegetable was filling. Ambience was quite tacky but nice, enjoyed the spot on service and music.

Szechuan Gourmet

Szechuan Gourmet was really solid. I would recommend the really spicy beef. The napa cabbage with flecks of peppers was amazing. The sea bass here and the tofu was really tasty too. Worth all of Frank Bruni's praise (2 Stars).

Try to Convince me, Convivio

So I was fortunate enough to close out my Restaurant Week 2008 extravaganza (well, not quite because it just got extended past Labor Day, but that's another story) with a trip to the completely refashioned L'Impero, aka Convivio.  To start, Convivio was no L'Impero, but it was pretty tasty.  This place is going to be known in the next few weeks for its Southern Italian dishes.  I had a great pasta, and the sea bass dish that my friend had was well prepared too, although a bit too small.  The zuppa was great, and my insalate was excellent.  While the decor in this down-scaled place was a bit funky (and a little sterile in my opinion) I thought that the food was pretty decent and the Italian wine selection excellent.  The waiters were a little awkward and some of the service kinks need to be worked out, but that will all come with time.

Mamoun's Restaurant

This storied village haunt may have some cheap falafel ($2.50), but the buck stops there. The food was mediocre at best, but great for when you are really hungry and want to gorge yourself. Worthy of a cheap eat, yes. Of another go around...no
